As you may have heard me mention in my videos, even though English is spoken in many different countries, because of accents and dialects the English can be hard to understand.
If you were to sit in a room where people from Africa, India, Asia and Europe were all speaking English, you would more than likely have a hard time understanding all of their spoken English.
One of my students once told me of her struggles with such a situation.
She said that she was on a LIVE ZOOM video call with people on the video call from India, China, Japan, Africa and Eastern European countries. She told me how hard it was for her to understand any of their spoken English – except for those people who from her home country of India.
I’m have no doubt that you may have been in similar situations.
This is why learning to smooth out your accent and speak English very well is very so important. And, it is even so much more important if you use English in your professional career.
I have heard professional people speaking English to me over the phone or online, and had to repeatedly ask them what they were saying because I did not understand them.
That can be embarrassing for both – the Speaker and the Listener.
So, it is good to know that people who want their English clearly understood, must know that they are speaking English clearly.
